From Betty: I never met my Berg grandparents until I was 7 years old. My parents, Gary, and I went to Washington to visit them. I so wanted a grandmother who would be so happy to see me that she would hug me and possibly even want to hold me on her lap. Wrong!!! I was so disappointed!! I don't remember either grandparent even smiling at me. I felt just as Henrietta Heezen Sievenpiper felt about her grandmother, Hendrika, on page 7 of the book that Henrietta compiled: "I never did sit on Grandma's lap and always felt very distant toward her". I know Grandma had several grandchildren around Chehalis and she was probably too tired to fuss over another one, but it was a HUGE disappointment to me. My brother, Sonny, on the other hand had met Grandma in 1948 when he was 13 yrs. old and he had a totally different take on her.
According to Betty's resources, Grandpa Otto Berg came to U.S.with his brother Arne, from Snasa, Norway on March 13, 1909 . They left for America on an English ship of the West Star line, which carried 2500 passengers from Norway across the North Sea to Southampton, England and New York. Grandpa's oldest Brother, Tarald, homesteaded 18 miles N.W. of Williston near Squires, a post office near the Montana line. In 1910 Grandpa and Arne homesteaded south of Schafer near the John Shaw Ranch. They first qualified for one quarter each but in 1913 the law was changed to permit homesteaders to get another quarter. Grandpa Berg sold his homestead and moved to Charboneau and then in 1937 moved to Klaber, WA.
