In support one can cite the names Sophie and Jutta in Gerhard of Müllenark's daughters.(64)
The name Judith, of which Jutta is a diminutive, is found in Gerhard II of Geldern's sister,
while the name Sophie descends without difficulty via Ermengarde of Zutphen.(65) Thus the
Müllenark affiliation with Geldern commends itself, even without addressing questions of
Looz and Lohn.
64) Regesten der Erzbischöfe, II, no. 1386 § 42. Gerhard of Diest would meanwhile draw an equivalent
rent from estates at Lechenich. The most advanced discussion is by Matscha, Heinrich I. von Müllenark, 71-
8, who on this point follows Möller, Stamm-Tafeln, II, 146. However, Gerhard of Diest's wife is unlikely to
be Sophie, since the source does not repeat her name in connection with him. Ermengarde, apparent wife of
Count Hermann of Saffenberg-Müllenark (both mentioned in the "Knechtstedener Mortuar," see Gosses,
"Knechsteden." 49, with erroneous attribution to thirteenth-century persons of non-comital rank), is
presumably a sister of Sophie and Jutta, and Gerhard of Diest's wife would be Ermengarde's daughter.
65) It is understood that the counts of Zutphen descended from the marriage of a Gottschalk with a
daughter of Liudolf († 1031), whose mother Mathilde was a daughter of Emperor Otto II and the Greek
princess Theophanu. Verdonk, "Graven van Gelre," 102-11, remains useful on this subject. The Greek name
Sophie occurs in Liudolf's sister, and it was possible for other names of early Greek or Palestinian saints to
occur among descendants; see Jackman, "Greco-Roman Fund," 14-56.
