Bonnie June Jellema.
Born in Holland, Michigan, July 1, 1923, she died in fair health, peacefully, in her room at Resthaven Care Center in Holland, Michigan, at 11:05 a.m. October 11, 2020. She was 97.
Bonnie was a warm, friendly, giving, compassionate woman of genuine sincerity in devotion to her faith and religious pursuits.
Having tried various brief occupations (among them student, nurse aid, receptionist, cleric, child caretaker, housekeeper, volunteer, teacher's aide in special ed, and assistant in her parents' work occupations), Bonnie later in life obtained her BA at Calvin College (1971). Her focus was sociology; but she also enjoyed classes in religion, theology, and Dutch language.
She was keen to help other people, especially those less fortunate or on the margins of society—developmentally challenged folk, international students, and the illiterate. In church activity she was recognized for her contributions as teacher, Sunday school secretary, choir member, prayer partner, Bible student, and missionary supporter. Fond of family gatherings, visits, letters, and maintaining those contacts, she also devoted much time to the family genealogy. Bonnie enjoyed riding her three-wheeled bike and walking, often participating in walks to benefit causes she respected; and she routinely did the CROP Hunger Walk.
Most notably, Bonnie found an immense delight in people, and expressed and exuded joy in her interactions with others. And where and whenever we have heard from any of them, that is heartily reciprocated.
Daughter of Elizabeth Marian Hartigh (1900-1966) and John Frank Jellema (1897-1966) of Holland, Michigan, Bonnie was preceded in her death by her sister, Gretchen Sanders Darrah of Whitehall, Michigan (July 1989); her brother, Roderick H. Jellema, Washington DC (May 2018); her brother-in-law, Gordon Darrah, Whitehall, Michigan (September 1997); her nephew, John Frank Jellema II of Rockville, Maryland (July 1973); her nieces, Kate (Karen J.) Sanders (July 2010) and Vicki Sanders (December 2019), both of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Bonnie is survived by her nieces, WendyLlyn Jellema Sanders, Whitehall, Michigan; Mary Beth Sanders, Whitehall, Michigan; Lorrie Darrah Griffin, Whitehall, Michigan; Marianne Wason, Raleigh, NC; her nephews, Curt Sanders, Montague, Michigan; Philip Darrah, San Antonio, Texas; David Jellema, Austin, Texas; Michael Jellema, New Era, Michigan; great nephew, David Sanders, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Surviving cousins (and their children) are too numerous to mention here; but, of particular note for their care and support for Bonnie, are Mary Jellema (Holland, MI) and her children, Reka and Bernard.
