Mrs. Carol Vander Zwaag, age 65, of Alton, passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2010, at her residence. There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, January 4, at 10:30am, at the First Presbyterian Church in Hospers. The Rev. Brian Janssen will officiate. Interment will follow at the Newkirk Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Carol Ann was born on February 4, 1945, in Le Mars, the daughter of Onno and Ruth Evelyn (Roerig) Jellema. She was raised at Orange City, where she attended the public school and at Alton, where she graduated from the Floyd Valley High School. She married Robert F. Krogman, and they made their home in Le Mars. He passed away on November 7, 1973. On January 6, 1978, she married Marion Dean Vander Zwaag at the First Presbyterian Church in Le Mars. They first lived in rural Orange City, and then they lived in rural Sheldon for 27 years. In August of 2009, they moved to their new house in Alton. Carol was employed at several businesses, mostly restaurants, specifically the Pantry Café in Le Mars, the OK Café in Alton, and Hardees in Orange City, where she was known as “Granny”. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, PCA, where she served in the nursery and participated in service groups. Mrs. Vander Zwaag enjoyed meeting friends for coffee, bowling for many years, playing cribbage, reading, and taking in the sun at Spirit Lake every summer with her family and friends. Survivors include her husband of almost 33 years; two daughters, Jaci Krogman, of Alton, and Robin Krogman, of Cedar Rapids; two granddaughters, Bailey (Jaci) and Jayden (Robin); four brothers and five sisters and their spouses, Virginia and Don Konz, of Remsen; Jean and Woodrow Wampler, of Dewey, Arizona; Bruce and Martha Jellema, of Alton; Gary and Debra Jellema, of Trimont, Minnesota; Mary and Tom Grosenheider, of Le Mars; Nancy and Leon Schwebach, of Alton; Tim and Theresa Jellema, of Le Mars; Lisa Jellema, of Sheldon; and Daniel Jellema, of Sioux Center; Marion’s family, a sister and her husband, Karen and Tom Feit, of Rushmore, Minnesota; and a sister-in-law, Janice Vander Zwaag, of Hospers; the Krogman relatives of her first husband; uncles and aunts, nephews and nieces, cousins, and friends. In addition to her first husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Gary Vander Zwaag; Marion’s parents, Bernard and Vaida Vander Zwaag; and her grandparents, John and Agnus Jellema and Matt and Mabel Roerig. Memorials will be directed to the Food Pantry and Bibles for Missions.
