Ronald K. Powers, age 55, went home to be with his Lord and Savior June 4, 2004, at the Seattle VA Hospital from Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). He was diagnosed with the disease in January of this year at the Phoenix VA hospital after two years of advancing muscle weakness. After his diagnosis he moved from Kingman, Arizona to live in Lynden with his sister and brother-in-law Roberta and Nick Honcoop.
Ron was born October 28, 1948 in Anacortes, Washington to Kenneth I. Powers and Helen Arlene (Pelcer) Powers. Ron attended high school in Anacortes through the 10th grade and enlisted in the US Army in July of 1966. He had two tours of duty in Viet Nam from 1967 through 1969. His first tour was with the 45th Scout Dog Platoon, 9th Infantry Division, along with his devoted dog, Artist. Ron's second tour was spent as a helicopter door gunner.
Ron was also stationed in Germany for three years; he enjoyed his time in Europe and used his leaves and off days to explore the countries and cultures of the German, English, Irish and Scottish people. He hitchhiked all around Europe and stayed in various hostels or was oftentimes invited into European homes. A favorite visit was a week-long stay working on an Irish farm. He had a gift of gab, enjoyed people, and could strike up a conversation with anyone, regardless of language. During his tour in Germany he also enjoyed going on 10 - 20 Kilometer "volksmarches". These were planned hikes where the participants would get their tickets stamped at various points of interest. At the end of each march, a medal was awarded to the finishing participants.
After being discharged for the Army, Ron worked on a dairy farm in Sumner, WA. and also in the tobacco fields near Lexington, Ky. He then entered the US Navy and spent the rest of his 23 year military career in SanDiego, Ca. and New Port News, VA. He was stationed aboard the USS Enterprise (#4) and served as a fleet mechanic until his retirement in December of 1991.
After his retirement, Ron traveled across the United States several times. He worked various jobs including driving truck, farm labor, processing crab in Alaska for two winters, and worked as a baker in Kentucky. His hobbies included drawing, working on Ford pickup trucks, traveling and baking.
Ron is survived by sisters Roberta Honcoop and husband Nick of Lynden, Robin Hatten of Waldron Island; brothers Russell Powers and Rick Powers both of Blaine; step-mother, Marjorie Thomas of Tacoma; nephews Dan Larson and wife Jaimie of Acme, and Joseph Hatten of Friday Harbor. He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece.
After many years of spiritual searching and studying, and the guidance of his dear friend, Pastor Mark Davies, Ron was baptized at Second Christian Reformed Church in Lynden on April 18, 2004. His faith in his Lord was witnessed by many through his strength and acceptance of his disabling disease. He was a blessing to the people in his 'Second' family as much as they were a blessing to him.
Memorials may be made to the 'Fix-it" Team Ministry or Benevolent Fund at the Second Christian Reformed Church, 710 Front Street, Lynden 98264 or the ALS Association; Evergreen Chapter; 6627 South 191st Place; Suite F-106; Kent, WA. 98032
