BIOGRAPHY
Son of Hendrik Wisse van Borselen, Wolfert was born about 1250 and became lord of Vere and Zandenburg. After 1271 he is mentioned in charters and acted as witness for Floris V, Count of Holland. Before 12 November 1282 Wolfert married Sibilie van Praet and they had six children. On 12 November 1282 Wolfert and his wife received the property of Zandijk on the island of Walcheren from Beatrix, Countess of Holland and this was later confirmed by her husband Floris V, Count of Holland.
Later Wolfert I, his brothers Raas and Jan and their cousin Floris van Borselen changed their allegiance to the Count of Flanders. However, by 1290 Wolfert was a councillor to the Count of Holland, only to switch back to the Count of Flanders, whereupon Floris V confiscated his properties.
On 1 May 1296 the three brothers were reconciled with Floris V and pledged their allegiance to him again. However on 27 June 1296 at Muiderberg, Count Floris was murdered. As the heir of the count was a minor, this placed Wolfert in a powerful position. In 1297 Wolfert married Catharina de Durbuy, but their marriage remained childless.
In 1298 Wolfert received the city of Oudewater and on 12 June 1299 the young count gave him the properties Benschop and Polsbroek as well as a house in IJsselstein. Wolfert was murdered on 1 August 1299 in Delft.
