Sigebert III
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Sigebert III (630?-660) was a Frankish King of Austrasia who began his rule in around 635 and ended it with his death in approximately February 660. He was the eldest son of Dagobert I.

To satisfy the Austrasian aristocracy, who exercised a certain autonomy, Sigebert's father gave him the kingdom of Austrasia although it remained part of the larger Frankish realm. On the death of Dagobert, Sigebert ruled Austrasia independently, and free from any subjection to Neustria.

He tried in vain to add Thuringia to his kingdom, but was defeated by Duke Radulph in 640. It was under his reign that the mayor of the palace began to play the most important role in the political life of Austrasia.

Grimoald, the son of Pepin I, managed to convince the king to adopt his son Childebert. When Sigebert finally had a son of his own, the future Dagobert II, the mayor of the palace felt threatened, and on the death of Sigebert he exiled the young Dagobert to Ireland. Sigebert's remains, defiled during the French Revolution, are preserved in the cathedral at Nancy.

Sigebert III

Sigebert III (c.630-656/660) was the king of Austrasia from 634 to his death on probably 1 February in 656, or maybe as late as 660.

Though only ten years of age, he was the leader of his army. The Chronicle of Fredegar records that the route left him weeping in his saddle. From this, we can surmise that, at least in part, the downfall of the Merovingian dynasty was a result of child rule, for both Sigebert and his younger brother Clovis II, who ruled in Neustria, were prepubescent children who could not fight on the field and whose regents had their own interests at heart.

It was under his reign that the mayor of the palace began to play the most important role in the political life of Austrasia. That mayor, Grimoald, the son of Pepin I, managed to convince the king to adopt his son Childebert.

It is notable that he is often described as the first roi fainéant—do-nothing king—of the Merovingian dynasty.

On the death of Dagobert, Sigebert ruled Austrasia independently, and free from any subjection to Neustria. Under the tutelage of Blessed Pepin of Landen and other saints of the time, the young king grew into pious adulthood.

He tried in vain to add Thuringia to his kingdom, but was defeated by Duke Radulph in 640. Though only ten years of age, he was the leader of his army. Though not a success as a king, he was revered as the founder of numerous monasteries, hospitals, and churches. He is regarded as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church and is the patron saint of Nancy.

He has been described as the first roi fainéant (do-nothing king) of the Merovingian dynasty.

Born in 629, son of Dagobert I, King d'Austrasie and Ragnetrud d'Austrasie, Some sources assert that Sigebert III was born in the year 631. Note - between 633 and 656: Sigebert III, son of Dagobert and Ragnetrude, was King of Austrasie from 633/634 [at which time he is only 9 to 10 years of age -- Thus, Pepin le Vieux or de Landen truly reigns as the Major Domo] to 656. He reigned under the tutellage of Pepin of Landen [when Pepin de Landen died in 640, Otto succeeded him] and of Grimoald. In 641, the nobles of Austrasia have Otto assassinated and Grimolad, son of Pepin becames Mayor of the Palace, and the Francs lose their sovereignty over Thuringia.
By 643, the Francs would lose all authority over the Allemanians (Germans). Between 644 and 645, after humiliating deafeats against the Thuringians and the Allemanians, Sigebert III, not having any heir, adopts the son of Grimoald and names him Childebert. In 646, Sigebert III's wife gives him a son, Dagobert II, which did not please Grimoald. Ten years later, Sigebert III dies.
He was a very pious man and founder of numerous monasteries. He was placed among the rank of the saints by the Church. Married before 652: Immachilde=Himenechilde, Queen d'Austrasie. Died: on 1 February 656 in France.

Occupation: King of Austrasia
--------------------
Sigebert III (c. 630–656/660) was the king of Austrasia from 634 to his death probably on 1 February 656, or maybe as late as 660.

Under the tutelage of Blessed Pepin of Landen and other saints of the time, the young king grew into pious adulthood.

He tried in vain to add Thuringia to his kingdom, but was defeated by Duke Radulph in 640. Though only ten years of age, he was the leader of his army. The Chronicle of Fredegar records that the rout left him weeping in his saddle.

When Sigebert finally had a son of his own, the future Dagobert II, the mayor of the palace felt threatened, and on the death of Sigebert (at the age of 25) he exiled the young Dagobert to Ireland. Sigebert's remains, defiled during the French Revolution, are preserved in the cathedral at Nancy.

Though not a success as a king, he was revered as the founder of numerous monasteries, hospitals, and churches. He is regarded as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church and is the patron saint of Nancy.

He has been described as the first roi fainéant—do-nothing king—of the Merovingian dynasty.

When King Sigebert III died in 656, Grimoald the Elder had Sigebert's son Dagobert II shorn of hair and packed off to an Irish monastery and then proclaimed his own son, Childebert the Adopted (or Adoptivus), king of Austrasia.

One of the first so-called rois fainéants ("sluggard kings") of theMerovingian dynasty, who held no real power of his own but was ruled bywhoever was his mayor of the palace.
Made king of Austrasia by his father, Dagobert I, in 634, Sigebert wasgoverned first by Bishop Chunibert of Cologne and Duke Adalgisile; then,on Dagobert's death, by Chunibert and Pippin I , the mayor of the palace(d. 640); and finally by Pippin's son, Grimoald , mayor of the palacefrom 642 or 643 until the king's death.
In the early 640s, when a certain Otto was mayor of the palace,Thuringia succeeded in
gaining effective autonomy at Austrasian expense. After Sigebert's death, his young son, Dagobert II, was sent off to an Irish monastery byGrimoald, who briefly established his own son, Childebert (adopted bySigebert when the king was still childless) on the throne.
