Betty "Betsy" Jean Butler Strating 86, was born on August 8, 1928, in Billings, Montana and peacefully passed away of natural causes on October 9, 2014, in McKinleyville, California. We all miss her very much, but are comforted to know that she is on the other side, enjoying a game of bingo, sipping a beer, and accusingly asking somebody, "Now why would you want to do that?" Betsy grew up on a farm in Montana before relocating to the Los Angeles area during her formative years. She enjoyed dancing to Lawrence Welk's "Champagne Music Makers" at the Aragon Ballroom in Santa Monica, camping, traveling, sewing, cooking, playing bingo and crocheting. Betsy raised her three children, Sandi, Margot, and Matt in the Los Angeles area before moving to McKinleyville in the early 1980's with her husband William "Bill" Butler Jr. Several years after Bill's passing, she met Dick Strating while they were both Senior Citizens on Patrol (SCOP) for the Sheriff's Department. They found love on the beat while writing parking tickets together. In more recent years, she could be seen driving her white Cadillac to Cher-Ae Heights Casino and the local Senior Center to play bingo several times a week. She is preceded in death by her parents George and Verna Meeks, husband Dick H. Strating, husband William "Bill" Butler Jr., ex-husband John E. Williams, brother George Meeks, and niece Sheryl Baker. She is survived by her sister Shirley White; children Sandi (Steve) Henry, Margot Doss, Matthew (Sherrie) Butler; stepdaughter Karen (Lee) Henderson and their family: stepson William H. (Gina Belts) Butler, and stepdaughter Margaret Stimson (Andy Gordon); nieces Willa Bagwell, Eleanor Baker, Darlene, Diane, Debbie; nephew David Meeks; grandchildren Chris Henry, Lindsay Von Gretlein (Seth), Brian Doss (Jacquie), Erin Thorpe, Matthew Doss, Jennefer Padula (Nathan), Kristina Butler; step-grandchildren Clea Frazier (Glenn), Talitha Hodgson (Brian), Valency Fitzgerald (Tom), Collin Butler, and Olivia Butler; great-grandchildren Ashley Murray, Julieann Richards, Dylan Thorpe, Kaitlyn Thorpe, Ayden Thorpe, Avery Padula, and several step-great-grandchildren; and her beloved dog Annie, who is being well-cared for by family. Betsy's family would especially like to thank the staff at Timber Ridge in McKinleyville for their care, the staff at Rite-Aid in McKinleyville for their patience, the staff at Cher-Ae Heights Casino bingo hall for their revelry, and her friend Darlene for enabling her to play bingo until the very end. Please join us for a gathering of family and friends on October 19, 2014,1 - 3 pm, at the home of Sandi and Steve Henry, 1858 Bella Vista Road, McKinleyville, CA, 95519. Her final resting place will be the ocean off of Trinidad State Beach, where she will be buried at seawith Bill. Betsy was a breast cancer survivor and appreciated the support of local organizations.
