History: (written by Taeke Binnert Haites)
On December 28, 1811 Anne Sjoerds and his brother Ulbe Sjoerds officially took on the family name of Haijtes, which he signed Haites.
Besides being a shoemaker Anne Sjoerds Haites also filled the role of bookkeeper for the "Oude Gild" which was a local health and welfare fund. He performed these duties from 1807 till 1823. He very probably joined the gild when he was 16 as was the tradition of the time.
The old guild "Eendracht maakt magt" [togetherness gives power] was established in Grouw in 1775. In the first book of this guild (fund) there was mention of the following families: Binnerts, Hoeneveld, Zwat, Halbertsma, Okkema, Sienema, Deelstra and Haites. These are names that have long been associated with families in Grouw. Meeting of the guild were held on Sundays, initially probably at the school, later at Anne's house. Anne was member 29. Onb 18 March 1807 the guild established a new set of regulations at a meeting at Anne's house. Anne periodically appears on the sick list of the Guild.
My grandfather Taeke Binnerts Haites was also an executive of "het Gild" for many years.
(partly taken from Hepkema's Courant of Friday April 17, 1936)
Heit, Haite, Heide is old Friesian male name, that as Haido, Heideare noted by FORSTEMANN, and which in the diminutive form are Heitse, Haitse (better written vorm Heittse, Haittse that is: Heitke, Haitke: Freisan ts-k) that are in common usage in Friesland. Of these manly names the following are still found in Nederland as family names: HAYTEMA, HAYTSMA, HAYTSEMA, HAITSMA, HAAITSMA, HAITZEMA, HAITES, HAAITES, HAITING AND HAITINCK, HEIDINGA, HEITINGA, HEITINGH, HEIDEMA, HEITES, HEITS, HEITSMA AND HEITSEMA, plus some place names. [Johan WINKLER: De Nederlandsche Geslachtsnamen in oorsprong, geschiedenis en betekenis, Haarlem, H.D. TJEENK WILLINK, 1885, page 27]
By adopting the name Haites, Anne and his brother Ulbe adopted the patronym of their grandfather which by tradition would have his name as Haite.
From 1781 to 1834 Anne maintained a Haites register.
Anne and his brother Ulbe were present at the wedding of Sjoerd Atzes van Stralen (Grouw 4 Jun 1812) and his sister Janke Atzes van Stralen (Grouw 25 Jun 1812) and noted as nephews (a term loosely used to indicate relative at the time). The mother of Sjoerd and Janke van Stralen was Ymkje Haites who married Atze Murks on 22 Nov 1772.
Anne was very literate despite his father probably being illiterate.
