  Nelson J. Gritter, formerly of Kalamazoo, MI, was received into glory on October 21, 2008. He was born in Falmouth, MI, on July 22, 1928, and married R. Ruth Ornee on January 27, 1949. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. John and Jeanette (Schoolland) Gritter, daughter, Lorraine Menninga, brothers, Clifford Gritter and Wilbur Gritter, sisters, Nelma Jasperse and Willaine Gritter, and in-laws, Helen Gritter, Dennis Jasperse, Dirk Broer, and Stewart Geelhood. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Gritter; daughter, Marilyn Gritter and Lauren Dennison; grandson, Shawn Menninga; granddaughter, Kimberly Menninga; brothers, Gordon Gritter and Dianne Long, and James and Edith Gritter; sister, Marian Broer; and in-laws, Tina Gritter, Willa Kenoyer, Elaine Gritter, and Florence Geelhood. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and by his former son-in-law, John Menninga. Nelson served in the Army Air Corps, attended Calvin College, and graduated from the University of Michigan. He retired from Redwood and Ross in Kalamazoo. He was used by God to serve on the Boards of South Christian Grade School and Kalamazoo Christian High School, in the offices of deacon and elder at Grace Christian Reformed Church and elder at Third Christian Reformed Church, and as treasurer of Classis Kalamazoo of the CRC for 30 years. He also served the CRC denomination on the Board of World Missions, the Ministers' Pension Fund committee, and the Board of Trustees. Along with his wife, Nelson was a 20-year volunteer for the Disaster Response Service of the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee and the Kalamazoo Chapter of the American Red Cross Disaster Response. There will be a private graveside committal service. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 25, at 11:00 a.m., at the Cascade Fellowship CRC, 6655 Cascade Rd. SE, with the Rev. Dr. Ken Baker officiating. Friends may gather to greet the family at the church an hour before the service.
