Fysieke beschrijving: Otto I van Gelre (about 1150 - August 25, 1207, buried at Klooster Camp) was Count of Gelre 1182 - 1207. He was a son of Count Hendrik van Gelre and Agnes van Arnstein. Around 1184 Otto married Richarda van Beieren, a daughter of Paltsgraaf Otto I of Bavaria. He participated in the Third Crusade (1189 - 1192), taking part in the Siege of Konya and the Siege of Akko. Otto was one of the last nobles from the low countries who returned from the crusade. Otto chose a party for the emperor and against the graves of Holland and the Duke of Brabant. He supported Louis II of Wage during the Wage War. In 1190 he was called the first digger of Gelre and Zutphen. The relevant record is the city letter to Zutphen. Otto granted Zutphen the first city of Gelderse city. His son Gerard III and grandson Otto II would use this Zutphense model as a model for the city privileges of various other Gelderse cities, making Zutphen the mother city of the Gelderse county. The date of the original record is probably 1194 and 1195. The saved copy is that of Gerard III. Otto I and Richardis were given the following children: Hendrik (about 1198), co-founder, engaged with Ada van Holland, daughter of Dirk VII, but died shortly afterwards and buried in the Abbey of Rijnsburg Gerard III van Gelre, successor of his Father Aleid, married to Count Willem I of Holland Otto I, bishop of Utrecht Irmgard (after 1230), married to Count Adolf I van der Mark Margaretha (-1264), married to Count Lotharius II of Ahr and Hochstädten, brother of Archbishop Koenraad of Cologne Mechtildis, married to Count Hendrik II of Nassau.
