MYTHOLOGY: He married Adrastus' daughter Eurydice, who bore him Laomedon and Themiste. Migrating from Dardania, of which his brother Assaracus became king, to Phrygia, he competed in games in which he won a prize of 50 men and 50 girls - and a dappled cow, which the local king gave him in obedience to an oracle. Ilus was commanded to found a city where the animal sat down. This it did upon a hil l near Mount Ida, sacred to the goddess Ate (Infatuation). There he founded the city of Troy (Ilium). When Ilus asked for a sign, Zeus sent him the Palladium, a wooden image of Athena, which droppe d out of the sky in front of his tent. At this spot he founded a temple for Athena. It was believed that as long as thePalladium was kept safe in the temple, Troy could not fall.
In the Iliad, Ilus 'tomb is mentioned near a wild fig tree in the plain of Troy but it is still uncertain whether it refers to him or his great nephew.
