He appears to have been allowed the title of EARL OF SALISBURY from the time of his father-in-law's death. He was Warden of the West March of Scotland, June 1420 till July 1434, when he undertook the wardenship of both Marches for one year. In 1453 the Earls of Warwick and Salisbury (and the survivor) were appointed joint Keepers of the West March. In November 1424, Keeper of the Forest beyond Trent. He is said to have served in France under his brother-in-law the Duke of York, when appointed successor there of the Duke of Bedford in 1436; and, with him, was a commissioner to treat of peace with France. On his return to England, 1437, P.C. In 1451 he obeyed the King's summons to come to him at Kenilworth, attended, and seemingly protected, him at Coventry, on his journey from Westminster to Northampton, and lastly into Kent. In 1454, when, in consequence of the King's insanity, the Duke of York was acting as his Lieutenant, the Earl was made Chancellor (2 April); appointed first of a committee of peers to provide for the safety of the seas; and (December) Keeper of Porchester Castle. He fought with the Duke of York in the 1st battle of St. Albans, May 1455. At Easter 1458 the King effected a public "reconciliation" between the Earls of Warwick and Salisbury and the Duke of Somerset. On the 2nd outbreak of hostilities, September 1459, Salisbury set out from Middleham. to join the Duke of York at Ludlow, on the way defeating a Lancastrian force from Cheshire at Blore Heath. In October the Yorkist forces melted away before the onset of the Lancastrians led by the King; Salisbury took refuge with the Earl of Warwick in Calais. A "Parliament" was held at Coventry, which attainted the Duke of York, the Earl of Salisbury and others. On their return from Calais in 1460, Salisbury was left to secure London. At Northampton (10 July) King Henry was captured; a Parliament was summoned in the King's name, which (10 October) annulled the proceedings of the Coventry Parliament, "unduely sommoned." On 12 August the Earl was appointed to defend Roxburgh against the Scots; on 29 October, Great Chamberlain of England for life. To meet the forces collected by the Queen, Salisbury marched north with the Duke of York, and was killed at the battle of Wakefield 30 December 1460, or captured and beheaded after the battle. He was buried at Bisham. The Countess of Salisbury, his widow, who attended the Coronation banquet of Queen Katharine, 1421, was attainted November 1459, by the Coventry Parliament (as above). In 1460 she was in Dublin with the Duke and Duchess of York, and accompanied the Earl of Warwick on his return thence to Calais. The attainder was reversed (as above). She died between 3 April and 9 December 1462. [Complete Peerage XI:395-8, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]chard NEVILLE , KG, Earl of Salisbury b: 1400 in Castle Raby, Durham, England.
