Mr. Engelkes became familiar with the undertaking business by helping his father and later he passed the state board examination and became a licensed funeral director. He followed that profession for 20 years. He was the county coroner of Butler county at the time of his death and had served for nine years on the Parkersburg school board. He was the board's president for five years. He died in his car on the way home from Independence, where he was preparing for his 5-year old nephew's (Frank Thomas Mooney) funeral. He had his 14 year old son, Wilbur, with him driving the car.
As they were approaching St. Francis hospital in Waterloo, the son asked his father what road to take through Waterloo, The son received no reply when he asked a second time, and upon looking at his father, he saw that there was something wrong with him. He turned into the hospital driveway and summoned help from the hospital. When they reached the car, Mr. Engelkes wasdead. Mr. Engelkes had been told a number of months age that he had a weak heart and his doctor advised him not to drive any distance alone in his car. It was because of these instructions that he took his son with him on his last trip. His funeral was held at the Congregational Church in Parkersburg. The services were conducted by Rev. Albert Rice and assisted by Rev. J. E. Drake of Cedar Falls. Burial was in the cemetery at Parkersburg.
