From the 1/7/1943 Edgerton (Minnesota) Enterprise: Mr. and Mrs. Chris Christians and Miss Lorraine Bylsma returned yesterday from Newport News, Virginia, where they had visited John Christians in an Army Hospital. John was very ill with pneumonia for a time, but was much improved when the travelers left for home. They had a wearisome trip, as trains were crowded and there were no sleeper accommodations.

---After being ill for several weeks with pneumonia at Fort Eustis, at Newport News, Virginia, John Christians, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Christians, of this community, passed away at the Army hospital at the fort last Thursday. His parents had left Edgerton on the previous morning for Newport News, but phoned from Cincinnati, and learned of his death, after which they immediately returned home. The remains arrived in Edgerton on Tuesday afternoon in charge of Sergeant Robert Akker, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who had acted as John's nurse during his illness.
---Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Christians home northeast of Edgerton and at the Christian Reformed Church in this place, followed by burial at the Hillside Cemetery. Five Legion members and Alfred Manning acted as pallbearers, those Legionnaires including Dr. I.M. Ford, Herman Heesch, H.C. Baldwin, Wm. Menning, and Gerrit Bylsma.
---A firing squad composed of I.M. Ford, H.C. Baldwin, Art Cooksley, Walter Seldon, Jim Jasper, Harry Brooks, Gerrit Blysma, Wm. Menning and Guy van Lant officiated at the cemetery, Art Broekhouse and Frank Roetman acted as color bearers, and Willard Brooks blew taps. Sergeant Akker performed the military honors at the church. The deceased was buried in his military uniform.
---The attendance was very large in spite of the bitter cold.
---John Wesley Christians was born July 5, 1921, on the place occupied by his people about seven miles northeast of Edgerton, and attended the rural school. On September 15th, 1942 he was inducted into the service at Fort Cook, Nebraska, and after a short furlough, departed on September 30, for Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, from which place he left for Camp Wallace, Texas, before going to Newport News, Virginia, probably in preparation for service in Africa.
---Left to mourn his departure are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Christians, three brothers and five sisters, those being Arnold, Mrs. Peter De Poorter, George, Henry, Mrs. Lawrence Zwart, Mrs. Peter Walhof, Jr., Winifred and Norma. There are also many nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts and cousins.
John was an active boy and apparently in vigorous health, but it is stated that he had previously suffered one or more attacks of pneumonia, which seem to have left him susceptible to that ailment.
He was a young man of many good qualities, and would no doubt have made an excellent soldier in any emergency.
His relatives and many young friends deeply mourn his early passing, and the sympathy of the community is extended to them.
