Jacob Proplesch and his family came to America early in the 1880's and homestead on the NE1/4 of 30-21-3 in Kalamazoo precinct on June 18, 1881. The final Patent dated March 27, 1889 was signed by President Benjamin Harrison. Homestead papers show the improvements on the 160A. to be a "...frame house 16 x 24, 2 floors, 4 windows, floor, straw roof, barn, granary, well, orchard grove, corn crib. Value about $800."
Jacob was born in Labeau, East Prussia, Germany on April 8, 1832. He was about 49 years old when he and his wife, Helene, age 51: came to America with their daughters.
Prior to her marriage to Jacob, Helena(nee Warstadt) was married to Daniel Gugat, who apparently died later. They had a son, Christoph Gugat, who immigrated to America a year earlier on March 30, 1880 at the age of 23. Christoph was born in Augstagirren, East Prussia, Germany which is only a few miles from Labeau and he undoubtedly was raised by Jacob as he was about 10 years old when his half-sister, Helene, was born. Marie Gall thinks he was in the military in Germany, as was his grandfather, Jacob.
The Homestead papers indicate Jacob settled the land with four children. The 1885 census include only daughters, Lena, Augusta, and Caroline. The fourth one could have been Christoph or it may have been "Yetta", the oldest daughter whom Marie Gall said was ill when they immigrated so she stayed behind in Germany and then came later. Marie stated that Yetta's poor health required her to live at Columbus most of the time and that she's buried in a Catholic cemetery there. She never married. The other 3 daughters, Helene, Augusta, and Caroline, were 14, 8, and 5 years old, respectively when they arrived in their new homeland. A little over five years later, Helene married Adolph Schilling, a widower with a small daughter. Adolph also was born and raised in the Labeau Germany area.
Jacob's wife, Helene, died in 1889 at the age of 59, She is buried in the Green Garden cemetery. Jacob continued to live in the Kalamazoo precinct until he sold the farm on December 24, 1901 to August Mueller. At that time he went to live with Helene and Adolph Schilling in Union Precinct.
Jacob died on April 25, 1912 at the age of 80and is buried in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery NE of Madison.
At this writing, nothing is known about the parents of Jacob and Helene. As mentioned previously, Helene was first married to Daniel Gugat and they has a con, Chrisoph, who was born in Augstagirren in 186. It is not known if this is also the birthplace of Helene.
