"the Armenian", basileus Rhomaiôn was an Armenian, a race d for its keen and subtle intelligence,
shot through with resourcefulness and guile. He was probably a prince of the Gnuni family of
Armenia. He was son-in-law of Arshavir the questor. He was born in Armenia. He was the son of
Bardas Gnuni. He married Theodocia Kamsarakan, daughter of Arschavier Kamsarakan, before 765. He
married Barca Turcina, daughter of Bardanes Turcus, after 802. He distinguished himself as a
general under Nicephorus I and Michael I and became strategus ("general") of the Anatolikon
district between 802 and 813 in Byzantine Empire. He and Barca Turcina were divorced before 813.
Emperor, Byzantine Empire, between 813 and 820. He took part in the campaign against the Bulgars,
but, when Michael unwisely refused the peace terms they offered, the Asian troops under Leo
deserted at the Battle of Versinikia, near Adrianople on 22 June 813. He deposed and replace
Michael I as emperor in July 813. He renewed the recognition of Charlemagne as Emperor in the
west in 814. He recognized Charlemagne's successor, Louis the Pious, as Basileus in 815. He
deposed the Orthodox patriarch Nicephorus and convoked a synod for the following month that
reimposed the decrees of the Iconoclast synod of Hieria of 754, which had opposed the use of
icons (religious images) in March 815. He died on 25 December 820 in Constantinople, Byzantine
Empire. Leo was assassinated during a Christmas service in the church of Hagia Sophia by friends
of Michael the Amorian, whom Leo had condemned to death the day before on a charge of treason.
Stabbed to death and then decapitated.
