Bulawayo, Zimbabwe
Bulawayo, Zimbabwe
Bulawayo is the second largest city in the country with a very laid-back air befitting an oasis town on the edge of the Kalahari. Wide tree-lined streets and suburban lawns belie the fact that Botswana is just over the border. Many visitors head for the Matobo Hills to see the balancing rocks and Bushman paintings of this astounding area of natural beauty.
Bulawayo means the killing place, in reference, it is thought, to the site of Mzilikazis Hill of Chiefs, where executions of rival tribes were commonplace. Through the centuries, thousands of battles have been fought in these boulder-strewn badlands. The most recent bloodshed was in the early eighties when President Mugabe forcibly put down any post-independence Ndebele fractiousness. The Ndebele were first defeated by the British who moved into the smouldering ruins and settled down. A gold rush gave the town initial impetus, but when a second Gold Reef City did not materialise, Rhodes railway put Bulawayo on the map. Today it is transport hub. It is the second largest city in the country but has the laid-back air befitting an oasis town on the edge of the Kalahari.
