John Lewis was a strong, robust man and brilliant studet and teacher. He taught some of the most difficult schools where pupils were often grown and many times whipped their teachers and ran them off; but it did not work with him. When he taught the Old Gray School, there were some very pugnacious students. Morton Case was one of them. He was large and in later years one of the best fighters in the community. Mr Case told me that he had tried John DeMotte on his first day of school. For his pains, he got the best and most thorough trashing of his life. After that there was no more trouble. John taught the entire term with no more disciplinary problems.
He married Nancy Stillwell on March 20, 1885. She was also a school teacher. She was born 17 May 1864 and died on November 20, 1949. In July of 1896 John suffered a fatal accident. He had a load of logs on a wagon going south on the road past Coleman School. The wagon ran over an obstruction and he was thrown off and under the wheels of the wagon. It crushed his chest and he died in the night in spite of all the effortrs to save him. His widow had their farm & by expert management reared all four children and gave them good educations. Both girls became teachers. The boys were both well educated and successful men.
