When Jan was bom his father was thirty six years of age and the family living in Head street, Schiedam in Holland.
His father, also named Jan, was a Salmon Fisherman and his mother's name was Neeltja nee Stuivenberg. Jan (John) was their 6th child and
third son. John's father died when he was fifteenleaving Neeltje a widow, their youngest child was twelve year old daughter also named Neeltje. In
adulthood John worked as crew on a ship probably of the Dutch East Indies Shipping Company and in 1858 arrived in Australia aboard the "St
Jan." Family tradition has it that he jumped ship in Adelaide and walked to the gold fields in Daylesford, hiding in a hollow log when the Police
game close on one occasion, where he married Elizabeth Mirriam Pitt in 1863. The ceremony took place in a private home, was officiated by the
incumbant Anglican cleric, the Reverend Giftord Price and John he gave his occupation as miner and living at Wallaby Creek.
Why did John leave his ship and his mother in Holland to begin another life in Austraia? The lure of a quick fortune must have been the dominant
factor as it was for so many at that time. Earlier in th at same year his eldest sister Antje had died. From the records available to us at present
(2009) it would seem that her married life had plenty of sadness. Three of her five children had died when her husband, Martinus de Buk pre
deceased her at the age of 34 (his age) in 1858. Only a month later, aged 32, Antje also died. Maybe these events gave John an urgency about
life, a sort of " I might as weil get on with living for live can be short judging be Antje's" Further, moving around the world wasn't a big thing for the
Dutch of those times. Holland had colonies in Africa and Indonesia and John had cousins in Java.
On Wallaby Creek John and Elizabeth leased a 13acre, 3 rod and 37 perch block of land from the crown at Coomoora, Glenlyon Shire. This
maybe where they were living whenthey were married and was definatley where they lived when second son John Adrianas was bom. Although
John had applied to purchase this land from the Government, the lease was transferred to a William Fowler in 1867 before freehold was granted.
Most likely John and Elizabeth reckoned that they could select a better piece of land for although it had creek frontage, the property was cut by two
water races and the "Daylesford Gold Mining Co" occupied almost half the site.
Where John and Elizabeth moved next is presently unclear. Glenlyon Shire rate books have them paying rates on a cottage on crown land until
1873. Sometime they selected a 1 acre piece of land sited on the Daylesford - Trentham Road at Musk Creek on the corner of Church Lane,
maybe they had a house here or a cottage or maybe they were renting one close by. A depostion by a witness, Mrs Cumow, at the inquest into
William's death in 1876 has the family living close by.
1881 saw John Koetsveld granted a lease of a 12 acre parcel of land again on the Wallby Creek, but this time further upstream at Musk Creek.
Here he and Elizabeth built a house planted fruit trees and farmed for the rest of there lives. This land is just oft Dairy flat road and the apple trres
they planted can be seen fromthe road. Elizabeth was known as "Nurse Koetsveld" for she performed the duties of a mid wife for many of the
district women.
In 1905 John made a return visit to Holland. His voyage took him via the Dutch East Indies where in Java he visited distant cousins on his father's
side involved in plantations there, sugar and coftee.
