The Speedwell had problems with leakage from the beginning and was finally determined unseaworthy to make the voyage with the Mayflower. When the Mayflower left England there were 3 pregnant women onboard. Elizabeth Hopkins gave birth at sea and named their son Oceanus. Susanna White gave birth to a son named Peregrine and Mary Allerton gave birth to a stillborn son. Two hired sailors are mentioned, William Trevore and ?? Ely ??. Bradford says "Two other seamen were hired to stay a year: when their time was out they both returned". So they did not stay in the Colony. Christopher Jones was the captain of the Mayflower. They anchored off the tip of Cape Cod on November 11, 1620. The Mayflower was "about nine score" according to Bradford. (William Bradford, OF Plymouth Plantation, written 1630-1654, original at Massachusetts State Library, Boston) The Mayflower and Speedwell had departed from London "The emigrants recruited at large by the merchant adventurers". Both ships left the harbor on August 5th, 1620 but had to turn back to Dartmouth as the Speedwell was leaking badly. Both ships sailed again around August 25th and had to turn back to Dartmouth shortly thereafter. They decided that the Speedwell could not make the trip so the consolidated 102 passengers on the Mayflower and the others went back home. "Altogether, some twenty persons, about a sixth of the company, had to turn back... Thomas Blossom withdrew and returned to Leyden with his wife and two sons. Cushman's friend, William King, decided that fate might have something better in store for him than becoming "meate for ye fishes". Also Robert Cushman stayed behind. For more information on *Edward Doty please contact Mary Beth, an ISTG volunteerCorrespondence 2/13/02 I recognize William Bradford, Peter Browne, John Tilley and John Howland as my ancestors. William Bradford was Gov. after John Carver died. He wrote a wonderful book and alot of poetry, based on his travels and loves...John Howland, and servant to Gov. Carver, was thrown off the Mayflower during a bad storm and saved by a topsail, and a few of his mates...Edward Dotey was one of them. He went on to be prosperous and was Leut. Governor of Plimoth Colony...Peter Browne was lost while hunting with good friend John Goodman and his pet dog...after a bout with a couple of wolves they found their way back, frost bitten and weary, but full of tales about their adventures. John Howlands future wife, Elizabeth Tilley and father John, and step-mother Bridget came over, too, but John and Bridget were among the many who died from the illness that developed during, and after the trip. The Bradfords, Howlands and Brownes prospered in family, as well as in daily life, in their new community...they went on to have many descendants, apparent in this website to be very true.
