In 1774 koopt hij zelf de brouwerij Het Bourgondisch Kruis in Oud Gastel en trouwt een dame uit het dorp.

In 1793 verijdelt hij met enkele collega’s de onderwaterzetting van het gebied om het dorp. Enkele jarenlater spant hij zich in voor de teruggave van de kerk aan de katholieken.

Dit is de bron van het kapitaal en de macht van de Gastelsche Mastbomen. In 1904 huwt kleinzoon AntoonMastboom, zoals dat hoort, een vrouw van even gefortuneerde komaf.

Een wilde investering van jongensdroom-achtige proporties is dat niet. Bier geldt op dat moment als de gebruikelijke drank. Mensen kunnen niet zonder, het hele gezin drinkt het. Water is niet te vertrouwen, vanwege bacteriën en vervuiling. Bij de bereiding van bier kookt en filtert men het water, en dus is het veilig.

Let wel, het is niet zo dat de hele familie door de bierconsumptie iedereavond lazarus aan tafel zit. Het bier uit deze periode kende een veel lager alcoholpercentage dan zijn hedendaagse varianten.

Na zijn overlijden in 1899 neemt zoon Jan de brouwerij over. Jan Mastboom was de laatste bierbrouwer vande Mastbomen, en verkocht het bedrijf in de crisis van de jaren 20. Maar het goudgele goedje blijft onderdeel van de familie.

En één van die burgemeesters (Antoon) huwt in 1904 met Marie Brosens uit Hoogstraten, eveneens telg van een brouwers- en burgemeestersfamilie.

Oorspronkelijk onderde naam ‘De Fortuyn’. Vanaf 1842 baat de familie Brosens deze brouwerij, waar in 1890 een mouterij aan werd toegevoegd, uit. Tot 1958 wordt er bier gebrouwen, daarna bouwt de familie het om tot limonadefabriek. In 1989 stopt het bedrijf definitief. De mouterij met mouttoren bleven bewaard en zijn sinds 2002 een beschermd monument, samen met het brouwershuis.
