Lambertus Stoffels was born 2 Febr 1920 in New Jersey as a son of Dutch-born Heimen/Herman Stoffels and Geertje/Gertrude Hagoort. Lambertus was killed during WWII actions on 20 Febr 1945 in Iwo Jima, Japan. On 20 Febr 1946 he was officially declared dead.
Bert Stoffels was a tailgunner in a Navy plane flying off aircraft carriers in San Diego. When WWII was going on, he became restless while training others in San Diego and told his commanding officer that he didn't want to tell his grandchildren that he had fought the war in San Diego. So he was given a combat assignment. He was lost on his first combat mission. He was in a plane that was shot down by enemy fire.
Bert Stoffels served at the US Naval Reserve as a quartermaster 1st class. He was honored with the Award Purple Heart Medal and the Air Medal.
On 15 Aug 1944 he started sending letters to his family. The last one is dated 9 Feb 1945. (Bron Find a Grave)
