   LifeSketch: As a younger son without prospects in Burgundy, he was sent to his mother's Norman home, where he received lands, including the Lordship of Brionne. However, in the 1046 he led a conspiracy to supplant the Norman Duke. he was defeated at the Battle of Val-ès-Dunes, and then besieged for three years at his castle of Brionne. He was then deprived of his lands and kept as a virtual prisoner at the Norman court.He was a son of Renaud I and Alice of Normandy, daughter of Richard II, Duke of Normandy. William was the father of several notable children, including Pope Callixtus II.ther and reigned over a territory larger than that of the Franche-Comté itself.
