Obituary for Derald E. Nathan
NORFOLK — Services for Derald E. Nathan, 75, Norfolk, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk. The Rev. Barry Williams will officiate. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Green Garden Cemetery near Madison. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 16, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1644 and the U.S. Army honors guard.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel in Norfolk.
He died Wednesday, June 17, 2015, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.
The son of Ervin and Evelyn (Makelin) Nathan was born Jan. 28, 1940, at Norfolk. He was baptized on March 3, 1940, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison and confirmed on March 29, 1953, at St. John’s Lutheran Church Green Garden in rural Madison. He graduated from Madison High School in 1958. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1959 to August 1965.
He married Judith Tiedgen on March 24, 1962, at First United Methodist Church in Norfolk. After marriage, Derald and Judy lived on a farm near Madison. In 1979, they moved to Derald’s family farm. He retired in October of 2010 and then moved to Norfolk.
Derald enjoyed farming, feeding his cattle and woodworking. He took great pride in keeping his farm machinery and antique cars in immaculate shape. He also enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s activities and cheering them on and listening from his chair, attending and participating in many car shows and parades, playing cards with his friends and taking fun tours/trips with traveling buddies.
He was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where he served as past elder and financial secretary. He was past president of Madison County Feeders Association, 81-91 Madison County Pork Producers and the Norfolk Antique Auto Club.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Nathan of Norfolk; his daughters Stacy and husband Don Stolze of Norfolk, Kim Ray of Norfolk, Jenny and husband Aaron Anderson of Lindsay and Kristy and husband Brandon Sonnenfelt of Hadar; 11 grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley and husband Dean Thompson of LaGrange, Ga.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Evelyn.
Music will be provided by organist, Lori Knapp, the Rev. Richard Snow will be the soloist singing “Lord’s Prayer,” and granddaughter Shelby Stolze singing “What A Friend We Have In Jesus.” Congregational hymns will be “Abide With Me” and “I Am But A Stranger Here.”
Casketbearers for the service are Curt Thompson, Sean Murphy, Chris Murphy, Larry Nathan, Mike Nelson, Richard Grant, Jerry Reiman and James Vandercook. Honorary pallbearers are Caitlin Wiley, Shelby Stolze, Cole Wiley, Nick Stolze, Nate Stolze, McKenna Wiley, Dylan Anderson, Parker Anderson, Alexis Anderson, Sierra Sonnenfelt and Taylor Sonnenfelt.
The Norfolk Antique Auto Club is invited to drive their automobile to Derald’s funeral and graveside service.
