What truly makes one great is oftentimes not a long list of achievements or droves of material possessions, but the ways in which tender hands can touch the lives of others. Dora De Pree was one such woman with a true servant’s heart and an unwavering faith who in her own humble way, spoke in quiet whispers to the hearts of so many in ways far too numerous to count. Dora’s life was a constant reflection of the Christian beliefs that were engraved upon her heart, and her family always knew that they were her priceless treasure.
At the turn of the century in 1900, life was remarkably different in nearly every way. The Industrial Age was in full swing and the average worker earned $12.98 for 59 hours of work. People found enjoyment in simple things like the game of ping pong which was first played in Britain, the craze of the teddy bear, and Sunday drives were quickly becoming the latest fad. It was also during this time that George and Dina (Smit) Rankens were thrilled to add another precious blessing to their family with the birth of their daughter, Dora, on March 2, 1907. Dora was raised with three brothers and eight sisters in the family home where she was given the Christian faith as a foundation that would prove to sustain her throughout her entire lifetime.
During the 1910s, American children were so often needed in the workplace, on farms, or helping with their family in a variety of ways, and as a result, very few attended school, and fewer still went on to graduate from high school. Dora was able to attend school through the eighth grade and then like so many others of this generation, she traded in her schoolwork for work in the school of life, on her family farm. This instilled in Dora not only a strong work ethic, but also the value of family working together for the greater good, establishing an appreciation and deep love for family along the way.
It was during her early twenties that Dora met a man who was a great fit for Dora as he too was a man who believed in honesty and had a strong faith in Jesus. His name was Harold De Pree and together Dora and Harold established a relationship that was deeply rooted in love and respect for each other. Having fallen deeply in love, Dora became Mrs. Harold De Pree in Hamilton, Michigan, in October of 1936, which happened to be Dora’s favorite month. The newlyweds then enjoyed a simple yet memorable honeymoon which consisted of a scenic ride through the country. The couple was thrilled with a blessing of their own with the birth of their daughter Nancy.
Dora was a genuine homemaker who loved caring for her family. One of her favorite things to do was to bake homemade treats for her family, famous for both her lemon and pumpkin pies. Dora embraced her role as a mother and viewed this as her highest calling. Faith continued to play an important role in the De Pree family. She and Harold were life long members of Bethel Reformed Church until they joined Trinity Reformed Church some time later. Dora always loved to sing the classic hymns like Great Is Thy Faithfulness, Peace Like a River, and What a Friend We Have in Jesus, and she would sing most anywhere too.
As is so often the case, Dora’s life was filled with vast amounts of both joy and sorrow. She was deeply saddened with the death of her beloved Harold in January of 1963, however, she continued on, drawing strength from both her faith and her family during these most difficult days. Dora learned to drive after Harold died. She enjoyed traveling to both Florida and Pennsylvania with her friends.
Dora was thrilled beyond measure when she was blessed to become a grandmother. She devoted hours too numerous to count to her grandchildren, and it was no secret that her favorite place to be was rocking a baby with a book. To Dora, each child was a unique gift in their own special way, especially when her family grew to include great-grandchildren.
Although Dora’s most important hobby was being a grandmother and great-grandmother, there were some other interests that she enjoyed as well. She always loved to bake and when she wasn’t in her own kitchen, she liked to go out to wherever she could get liver and onions. Dora also enjoyed reading and her worn and tattered Bible was always her favorite book. Her family also recalls Dora often teaching the family dog new tricks a time or two. In whatever she was doing, Dora loved having fun, taking each day and making it her own.
Dora De Pree was an extraordinary woman whose greatest possessions were not material things, but rather they were her faith, her family, and her church. She lived a humble and simple life in service to her Lord Jesus Christ. Although Dora lived a rich and fulfilling life laced with several joyous occasions, she viewed her greatest days to be when each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were born. Even though her family will miss her dearly, they take comfort in knowing that she has received her final reward and is walking hand-in-hand with her Savior along the crystal sea. She leaves behind a legacy of faith and love that will surely withstand the test of time.
