A COUNTRY club manager from Port Elizabeth was killed in an attempted hijacking, Eastern Cape police said yesterday.
Walmer Country Club manager Jan Gerrit Hoekstra, 61, was on his way to the bank on Monday when he was attacked, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said.
"A shot was fired by a suspect who tried to hijack his Opel Astra. He sped away but his car hit another vehicle. He swerved to the side and hit a tree on the corner of 8th Avenue and Heugh Road.
"The incident was first treated as an accident until paramedics noticed he had a gunshot wound to the upper body while treating him. He died on the scene," Janse van Rensburg said. Police are investigating.
