Edwin Leonard Knopf, age 86 of Port Sanilac, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the Sanilac Medical Care Facility in Sandusky.
He was born September 3, 1927 in Flint, the son of Frederick and Nella (Kammeraad) Knopf. He was married to Dorothy Ann Vogt on September 11, 1951.
Edwin attended Lutheran and public schools in Flint. He received a BA degree from Colgate University in 1949. He became a Presbyterian minister after graduating from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He also attended Harvard Divinity School before moving his family back to Michigan in 1960. In addition to other pulpits, he was a minister at the Marlette Presbyterian Church for several years. He taught in the Flint public schools for approximately twenty years and received a MA in education from Eastern Michigan University during this time. Later in his career, he built a residential rental business in Flint.
Edwin was active in many social and political causes during his lifetime. He marched in Selma, Ala. with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the civil rights protests of the 1960s and took a life time interest in civil rights. He was active in politics and was a candidate for state and federal offices. He tried to follow his theological training by, among other causes, speaking out against the Vietnam War when it was unpopular do so and helping inner city kids who were in trouble with the law. He had a strong social conscience.
Ed liked the outdoors, especially the Lake Huron shoreline area. He had many boats during his life time (some of which were not too sea worthy) and enjoyed cruising on Lake Huron. He was an avid walker. It did not take much to make him happy and in his later years, he enjoyed just puttering around his home and contemplating the peaceful environment around Port Sanilac.
He leaves behind his wife, Dorothy of Hallowell, Maine; daughters, Lois and Evelyn (Ev) of Bangor and Augusta, Maine; son, Christopher (Chris) of Flint; nephews, Fritz and Richard Knopf and Rod and Gary May; nieces, Barbara (deceased) May Novatis, Loretta (Lori) Knopf Murray.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Elmer A. (1992) and Lyle S. (2014) and sister, Eleanor Dolinga (2012).
Cremation will take place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City.
