Google searches find Swartcruijs families in Weurt
Weurt is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of Beuningen, and lies about 0.1 km West of Nijmegen.
The information on the earliest generations of this Roman Catholic family, originally from Weurt (also Wurdt) near Nijmegen in the Dutch Province of Gelderland has been kindly provided by Dr. Theodore C. Zwartkruis (USA). The unusual name of this family, meaning "Black Cross", was apparently derived from the black cross on the white cloaks worn by the Knights of St. John (the "Hospitallers"), who maintained a base in Nijmegen until the beginning of the Reformation. When the Protestant faith had become the official State religion, the Roman Catholic inhabitants of Nijmegen had to have a black cross painted on their houses as a clear sign (and a warning) that they were no Protestants. This practice was continued as late as the eighteenth century.
The black cross is also present in the family's old coat of arms which was rediscovered in the Archives of Nijmegen by Ed Zwartkruis in 1992. Ed also saw the article written by Jacques G. Peters on his Zwartkruis ancestors: "Het begon in Wurdt", Nijmegen 1985; also see "Mededelingen CBG" 48 (1994), nr. 1, p. 15. Jacques Peters had found the same coat of arms, in black and white, which was in the possession of Jan Zwartkruis (the former trainer of the Dutch national soccerteam). The coloured version, presented here, was rediscovered in 1993 among the papers inherited by yet another member of this family.
