In the 1820 census for that county he is shown with one other male in the household, probably his brother Isham. In 1821 Robert was employed to lay out a new route on higher ground for a portion of the Kaskaskia road, through what is now Williamson County, then a part of Franklin. This became known as the "Worthen Trail" In about 1830, Robert married Rebecca Hooker. In 1832 he served under Capt. Obediah West int he Blackhawk War. While he was away in the war, his wife Rebecca had a son, Joshua, with was fathered by Robert's brother Isham. His marriage to Rebecca ended in separation and divorce. He returned to Jackson county in 1837. In 1840 he married again, to Rebecca Parmley. His first wife, Rebecca Hooker married his brother Isham. Montague's Directory for 1854 shows him as a Methodist minister.
