Newspaper article, March 9, 1909 Andrew Hlavinka killed at Munts South Shaft - -he leaves wife and family Crushed beneath a solid rock, weighing more than four tons, Andrew Hlavinka met instant death in Munts' south shaft at 10:30 this morning. The fatality followed the firing of a shot . . . Hlavinka, his son, Andrew Jr., and Henry Cleal were working at the "face" together. They placed the shot and retreated to a safe distance. While they were waiting for the smoke to clear away they ate lunch. Hlavinka finished first and returned to the "face". He was heard picking down the loosened coal and then the thud of falling rock startled the lunchers. They called to Hlavinka and he did not answer. They called loudly again and then approached the spot where the blast had been fired. Only a monster fallen rock met their apprehensive gaze. They walked around the murderous boulder, but the glimmer from their meager lights revealed only the horrifying spectacle of a human hand extended helplessly, from beneath the crushing weight of stone. Although twelve miners were hurried to the spot, they were unable to remove the rock from the man's body. In order to recover the crushed and distorted corpse, it was necessary to break the rock into sections. The dead man was taken to his home at old No 8. The deceased was 48 years of age and is survived by his wife and four children - -two boys and two girls. John Gall, the South Bloomington street saloonkeeper, is a stp-son of the dead man. The Hlavinka family has met with an unusual amount of misfortune recently. About a month ago the home burned down at old No 3, in which the family loast practically everything that it owned. The funeral arrangements have not yet been completed. Obituary; March 10, 1909 ANDREW HLAVINKA FUNERAL The funeral of Andrew Hlavinka, who was killed yesterday in Munts' south shaft, will be held tomorrow morining at 10 o'clock at old No. 3 church; with interment in Riverwood.
