David Alexander Kottwitz, age 85, died on Sunday, February 4, 2012, athis home in Richland. He was born and raised in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, studied at Tulane and graduated from the University of Texas. He was an officer in the Navy during World War II and received his PhD. in physics from the University of Pennsylvania. He moved to Richland in 1956 and worked for GE and then Battelle Northwest until his retirement. In addition to his work in physics, he was a lover of music, particularly opera. He was an avid reader with a particular interest in American history. He loved the Columbia River, the Horse Heaven Hills and the Richland Public Library. He volunteered his time with the Friends of the Library, tutoring young students, and at the CREHST museum.David was married to Mary Barbara for 20 years. They enjoyed trips to Seattle to attend the opera. David and Mary Barbara particularly enjoyed a trip to Norway, traveling on a boat up the coast to the Arctic Circle.He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth (Lovejoy) Kottwitz, and his son Philip. In addition to his wife Mary Barbara, he is survived by his sons Robert and Jonathan and his grandsons Michael and Kenneth.
