Obit: He was born in Singapore to Bert William Levit and Thelma Clumeck Levit. In 1931, Victor moved to San Francisco where he grew up on Washington Street.
While in high school at Lowell, Victor authored a column in the San Francisco Chronicle from 1942-1945 called "Vic's Pics." In the column, he handicapped football games against famous national oddsmakers, usually beating their picks, and became known around San Francisco as "Victor the Picker." He graduated from Stanford University in 1950 Summa Cum Laude with an AB in Political Science and in 1952 from Stanford Law School. At Stanford Law School, Victor was a member of the Law Review, was elected both to Phi Beta Kappa and Order of the Coif, and became the youngest ever graduate of Stanford Law School at the time.
Victor joined Long & Levit, the firm his father co-founded and became managing general partner, leaving the firm in 1983. Throughout his life, Victor was involved in a number of civic and professional organizations as a board member and in other capacities including the Commonwealth Club, San Francisco Aid to Retarded Children, San Francisco Commercial Club, Salvation Army, San Francisco Planning and Urban Renewal Association, National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis, and Stanford Law School. In 1960, Victor was named by the managing editors of various San Francisco neWroclaw, Silesia, Polandapers "Outstanding Young Man" for San Francisco. He served in many leadership positions in the San Francisco, California, USA, American, and International Bar Associations.
Victor served as Honorary Consul General to the USA under Ethiopian Emperor Haile Salaisse (the last Emperor in the 3000 year old Ethiopian Monarchy) from 1971-1976.
In 1983, Victor founded the San Francisco office of Barger & Wolen and stayed until 1995. He was an expert on legal malpractice and authored several books and articles published in the 80s and 90s. He was selected to be a part of the American Law Institute in 1985 as an advisor for the restatement of law governing lawyers.
Victor was a longtime subscriber to the SF Symphony, an internationally-known collector of rare books, an outstanding poker player, 49er Faithful, and loved travel of any kind.
He is survived by his wife, Margery Kaplan Blum, a native San Franciscan but now of Sebastopol, CA, his two children by his first marriage to Sherry Levit Penzias (Chamove), Victoria Zaroff (Jonathan) and Carson Levit (Suzanne) all of San Francisco, six grandchildren - Sam, Leo, Eliza, and Roxanne Zaroff and Alexis and Carson Levit. He is survived by step-children Philip Blum (Chris) of Chicago IL, Jane Evenson (Eric) of SF, Belinda Randolph (Thomas) of La Cauada, CA, and Walter Blum of Tahoe, CA, and three step-grandchildren Sarah Evenson and Michael and Matthew Randolph. He was predeceased by his brother, Roger Levit of Santa Rosa, CA. There will be a private memorial. Published in San Francisco Chronicle on Jan. 12, 2014
