On June of 1932 Percy and his wife Joyce left Liverpool, England on board the Duchess of Richmond and arrived in Quebec for a visit with family in P.E.I. When the 26th New Brunswick and PE Battalion was being recruited for WWI, Percy Clark Sherren , who was a member of the staff of the Bank of NS in Saint John NB, returned to Charlottetown where he recruited a company and escorted them to Saint John. He left with the 26th Battalion as Lieutenant for overseas on October 20, 1915. Later on patrol duty in France, he was wounded and was returned to hospital in London, England. At this point it is interesting to note that Lieutenant Sherren has the opportunity of meeting a distinguished specialist in surgery, by the name of Dr. James Sherren, who was a direct descendant of James and Mary Sherren, thus linking him with the Sherrens today residing in PE. After being discharged from hospital on 15 May 1916, Percy C. transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and it appears that flying was his life from then on. Percy became a flying officer in July of that year and ten weeks later a Flight Commander as temporary Captain. He was cited for conspicuous gallantry in leading successful bombingraids like the one for descending to within five hundred feet and successfully bombing an enemy ammunition train. It was with this branch of the forces that he was awarded the Military Cross on November 25,1916. He was awarded a Bar on June 4, 1917 and mentioned in dispatches on several occasions. He was granted a permanent Commission in the Royal Air Force. In 1919 he was gazetted as a Major in the Reserve of Offices of the Canadian Militia. For flying services in the North West Frontier Province of India, between 1921 and 1924,he was awarded the General Service Medal with Clasp. Later he was stationed at the RAF Depot at Uxbridge and the Home Aircraft Deport at Henslow. In 1920 to 1922 he served in India and in 1930 he was awarded Wing Commander. On the 28th September 1936 the Company A was issued to Phillips &Powis Aircraft Ltd., Woodley; On the 10th September 1937 it crashed atthe foot of Scarborough Cliffs during the Kings Cup Race due to violent turbulence. Wing Commander`s E.G. Hilton and Percy Sherren mettheir deaths when they were thrown through the roof of the cockpit andout of the aircraft.
