Just across the Portuguese border from the Spanish town of Plasencia where it seems many Jews fled from the Inquisition it has been discovered that there is an unusually large presence of Y Haplogroup T in towns where there is a nearly forgotten tradition claiming Jewish ancestry. Judea and Phoenicia cooperated closely and it would not be surprising if the Phoenician trading posts were at times run by Jews.
The island just south of Majorca is Ibiza which has strong Carthaginian and Phoenician historical roots. There is a town called San Antonio although the natives call it " Portmany" (the" Big Port"). Portmany and the surrounding area has one of the highest known concentrations of Y DNA haplogroup T! Another example is the city of Cadiz in the south of Spain which was founded by the Phoenicians. The above mentioned city of Plasencia, further north near the Portuguese border, was on an ancient trading route from Cadiz later used by the Romans. Djerba is not too far away and has historic ties with Majorca. I have heard that the dwindling Jewish population of the island claims Levite roots dating way back to the destruction of the first temple! Although it is an island it is joined to the mainland by a causeway that apparently exists since at least Roman times.
One interesting thing about Djerba is its proximity to Phoenician Carthage. It may be just coincidence but the rare and widespread haplogroup T seems to follow old Phoenician trade roots
Dr Chamove was going to a ophthalmological conference in India and was passing through Ethiopia on his way back. Apparently the emperor was having some eye trouble and somehow discovered that Arnold was in the capitol city. He was summoned to examine his eyes, and prescribed some soothing drops. The two of them seemed to hit it off. Arnold is quite informal with people, not disrespectful but just not obsequious, but gets on well with janitors and emperors both. They became sort-of friends. He was asked to come back again and again to check members of the royal family and became a good friend of one of them too, Ras Mesfin. The whole family was asked to come to Ethiopia and asked to enter the diplomatic service for Ethiopia--the men at least, and so Arnold, his daughter's husband Victor, and his son Arnold did so. Every year after that, at least one of us would visit Addis Ababa ... until he was overthrown by a communist coup and smothered in his cell. We put together proposals to bring money into the country, to protect wildlife, and to develop student exchange programs which earned son Arnold the Ethiopian Star Second Class. We'd be invited whenever HIM Haile Selassie visited the White House to sup with Nixon, and other events around the USA
