Notities over James Chilton

Among the Mayflower Pilgrims (or Saints as they called themselves) were members of the Leiden, Holland congregation. These were English Protestant people who were persecuted by the Church of England and fled to Holland, a country noted for religious tolerance at that time. Though they were free to practice their religion, they were unhappy that their children were growing up Dutch, rather than English.
James Chilton was one of the signers of The Mayflower Compact onboard the ship. This agreement, the first governing document of the Plymouth Colony, is also the first American majority agreement addressing rules and responsibilities for the sake of order and survival of the group.
