his first documented clash with the law was his appearance at the Central Criminal Court the Old Bailey in 1810. He was sentenced to transportation for pick-pocketing and confined to the Zealand prison hulk, but not sent to Australia. Escaping the hulk, Ikey later turned himself in and received a pardon in 1816.
He eventually set up a tobacconist's shop in Hobart and was a seatholder at the Hobart Synagogue. Ikey died on 3 September 1850 and was buried in Hobart's Jewish cemetery.
About 70,000 British convicts were transported to Tasmania, then labelled on maps as Van Diemen's Land, between 1804 and 1850 of those, 218 males and 15 females were Jewish--0.3%. Following in his father's footsteps, Ikey was a known receiver and seller of stolen goods in London who bolted from police custody in 1827, fleeing overseas. In 1828, Ikey's wife was transported, along with their children, to Van Diemen's Land after being convicted following the police discovery of stolen goods in the family home . et, having committed no crime on Vandemonian soil, he could not be arrested by the colonial authorities,"Then governor George Arthur issued a warrant under his own name, and this was enough to have Ikey returned to England for trial." Charged for receiving stolen goods, Ikey was finally convicted and sentenced to 14 years' transportation, arriving again in Hobart in 1831, under very different circumstances than before. after being granted a ticket of leave in 1835, Ikey took up residence at New Norfolk and was "reunited with his family", however they "had now become estranged from him and there were violent quarrels". By 1840, he had moved back to New Town, north of Hobart and opened a tobacconist shop."his estate did not exceed 70 pounds"
IKEY ISAAC SOLOMONS: I am trying to trace the famous Ikey Solomons as far back as I can. He was bprn 1786 on Gravel Lane in London was was transported in 1828 and died in Hobart marrying Hanna Julian. His parents were Ziv Hirsch Solomon (not the more-common Salomon spelling) in Wurzburg, Bavaria, Germany in 1759. I was hoping that some keen Australian who might be a descendant (or not) might have been able to go further back in his ancestry and help
