The tiny little village of Kukliai has to be the most obscure and microscopic place on this earth, but it is where the Kuklya name originated. This really truly is an insignificant, remote, and extremely tiny little village, hidden away in the Lazdijai region of Lithuania. It was the location where Avraham Joffe settled and had his fifteen children. These fifteen children all were born with the Joffe name, however his son Zalman adopted the title Zalman Joffe of Kukliai. And named all of his children Kukliai rather than Joffe. And as such, predating Rezhitsa by a couple of hundred years, it is the absolute undisputed original source of our family name.
Kukliai is now in Poland. The nearest major towns and cities, in this general area, were Vishay (also known as Veisiejai), Alytus, and Metele, Giby, Sejny.
This is the actual town where our Kuklya family formally began. Eventually most of the family moved away to Latvia, particularly to the town of Rezhitsa, but certainly in the 1500s this little Shtetl was our official home. From historical photos of the town, it had no more than twenty dwellings which were mostly occupied by our family, but they soon outgrew this tiny rural village long before the migration to Latvia, and in the early days, many moved out to Vishay and Metele, simply because there was no more room in the village. .
