My mother was born Anne Sarah Baillie. Her father was James Reid Baillie, and James married my grandmother on April 1, 1918. He died in November of the same year from the great flu pandemic of 1918, and my mother was born an orphan on January 5th of 1919. She never knew her father and never saw a photo of him. However, through Wikitree, I encountered one Alex Attewell, whose grandfather married Jamess sister Sara Baillie, and a few years ago Alex sent me an excellent photo of the wedding party. It shows the mother and father of James, James himself, along with his sister the bride and another sister as bridesmaid. When I saw this photo I was stunned. If only my mother, who died in 2010, could have seen this photograph.
WZ joined the Australian Imperial Force in 1915, and was shipped to France via Egypt. Arriving in the worst winter Europe had had in 50 years. He had never seen snow before. It was not long after that his battalion was thrown into the battle of Fromelles, which began at 6pm one night and was over within 24 hours. it was a massacre. The Australians advanced from knee-deep mud trenches across open fields towards the German lines into a hail of machinegun fire. The German troops were in concrete bunkers, going 20ft down into the ground. That night 300 of the 1000 men in the battalion perished. One can assume that the rest were badly injured. The British generals who arranged this stunt had tried the same thing one year before, with the same result. After the second fiasco the whole thing was hushed up. about the battle of Fromelles. Six books were published. A hundred years after Fromelles the truth had surfaced. They all had extracts from a document written about the battle, by Captain W.H Zander.
