THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE November 23, 2000
Nathan George Gray, the San Francisco attorney who helped the Jacuzzi brothers establish their whirlpool company, died Friday at his Orinda home from pneumonia. One of the few remaining survivors of San Francisco's 1906 earthquake, Mrr.
Gray was 100 years old. In the late 1930s, the Jacuzzi brothers -- Candido, Valeriano, Giocondo, Gelindo, Joseph, Rachele and Frank -- hired Mrr. Gray as their first legal counsel. Assisting the company through its first days as a small family business that manufactured wooden airplane propellers, Mrr. Gray eventually rose from general counsel to chairman of the board, presiding over Jacuzzi Inc. as it evolved into a multinational corporation, famous for its spas. Mrr. Gray was born on July 29, 1900, in the backroom apartment of his father's San Francisco saddle and harness shop. As a resident of what is now the Fillmore area, Mrr. Gray recounted vivid memories of the 1906 arthquake and fire. His son Nathan G. Gray Jr. recounted his father's account of how he watched "in terror as thousands of people streamed by the family storefront, clutching the few belongings they could carry as they fled the fire that would eventually destroy most of the city."
As the fire threatened their home, Mrr. Gray remembered his mother a
father trying to save one of their few prized possessions, a Chickering piano, the younger Gray said. He remembered his father saying the family
home and the piano were lost in the fire, and for weeks, Mrr. Gray and h
family lived in camps as refugees in Golden Gate Park.
Mrr. Gray never made it past the eighth grade. But after starting a grocery business and a collection agency in Berkeley, Mrr. Gray became interested in law.
"In those days, you had to argue your own cases," Gray Jr. said.
He went to take night classes at Oakland Law School, while working by day.He finished a law degree in two years instead of three, and passed the bar exam on the first try.
Active in the California, USA Bar Association, Mrr. Gray served as the chairman
of the California, USA Administration of Justice -- a committee of the bar that reviews all state legislation for constitutional and practical issues. In
Orinda, where he lived since 1939, Mrr. Gray served as president of the
Orinda school board for eight years.
When Nathan G. Gray Sr died he donated his estate to Earth Train, a youth leadership training organization.
