Kalonymos or Kalonymus is a prominent Jewish family who lived in Italy, which, after the settlement at Mainz and Speyer of several of its members, took during many generations a leading part in the development of Jewish learning in Germany. The family is according to many considered the foundation of Hachmei Provence and the Aschkenazi Hasidim. the Germanic uColemanu (with its various spellings) was ot the basis for the Jewish use of the name Kalman, but that it had Greek origin
Your paternal grandparents were from Gumbin, where your grandfather was a famous rabbi. Because of his extraordinary learning, he was given the moniker "good Jew." He gave his only child a very good upbringing [End of second page] and married him off in his seventeenth year. His son was completely inexperienced in the German language and thus had to be taught it in his new homeland, but he didn't have to study long. In a very short time, he was able to understand and solve the most difficult problems. He and your mother had a good marriage until a law was passed that nearly caused their separation. All Poles were driven out of Germany, and since your grandparents didn't want to give up their youngest child, they found no other solution but divorce. With a heavy heart, your father appealed to the government, which finally, but only temporarily, allowed him to stay. Your parents' business was a pastry and spirits shop, and business was so-so, until they lost everything they had in a big robbery. Only with great difficulty were they able to get on their feet again, and then your father died in about his forty-seventh year. Your mother kept the business going. Meanwhile, all the children but Uncle Isidor had left their parents' house. But she lost everything again. One night her house burned down, and she was left with nothing but her and her son's life. Mom took them both in. Uncle married after a year. Grandmother is still with us, but she leaves a monotonous life, which is interrupted now and then by good or sad news.
