First Eggleston b. 1523 Settrington, Yorkshire, England d. aft 1562. When Amos Egelsonn move to Kentucky about 1830 changed spelling of name. Eggleston ancestry went back to Bygod Eggleston, an immigrant who came to America from England in 1630,
Christine Egelston Spratley, daughter of Ed Egelston provided the following information about her dad. Ed was about 2 years old when his mother passed away giving birth to twin girls who also died. His mother also had cancer. The Hastys, who were neighbors and very good friends of the family and were childless, took Ed and raised him. They always wanted to adopt him,
but his father would not allow it. Since the Hastys lived closeby to his natural family, he never lost contact with his siblings. He lived with the Hastys until his marriage. After his marriage he was a baker in Westmoreland, Kansas and had a small confectioner's store where he served light meals. About ten years later, Ed decided to move to western Kansas where his uncle, Charles Martin Egelston lived. He left his wife and children in Westmoreland until he could send for them. They
traveled by train to Colby, Kansas where Ed met them in a covered wagon. For a short time they lived with his Uncle Martin and family in a sod house which was common at that time on the Kansas prairie. The ceiling of the house was made by cutting small logs, them covering them with big squares of sod like the walls. The walls were plastered with mud and white washed with a substance made of lime. Ed bought a farm on Beaver Creek near Atwood, Kansas. The house was two stories with two bedrooms upstairs and a living room and kitchen downstairs. They ordered furniture from a Montgomery Ward Catalog and received a book case as a premium for ordering a certain amount of furniture. One special item of furniture was a "concert piano". Ed loved music and always had to have a piano in the house. Although he was a farmer, he also taught music to the band at the Atwood school. He organized a neighborhood band and called itthe Beaver Valley Band. About 191l he sold his farm and moved to town. He bought the St. Francis theater and also ran a local show house. Christine said of her father, "Dad's greatest love was music and wanted all of his children to become musicians. His failing was that instead of
making music fun for them, he pounded it into them. So instead of enjoy it, it was a burden to them."
