BIOGRAPHY: Here is a letter from Melbourne describing the Smartfamily'sarrival 29 Apr 1858 from Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland via Liverpool. So, three months on board the Arabian and poor Agnes had one infant and was pregnant with Caroline Jane who was born 8 Aug 1858.Martha Goettling lived with Caroline, her grandmother, when she was growing up and shared a few of her memories with us last summer: William Smart, bootmaker, was also a choirmaster and played the violin. His parents were Euphemia Thomson and Alexander Smart. William and Agnes were married in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. Their immigration was government-assisted. Caroline had other siblings: Euphemia, Archibald, and Agnes. Their home in Melbourne was a white bungalow with a white picket fence. Martha repeated the story we had all heard that Caroline ran away and eloped with a Russian sea captain when she was 17 and landed in Astoria. The 1880 Census for Astoria dated 16 & 17 June 1880 shows her husband was John P. Wilson, age 37, fisherman, and that he and his parents were born in Finland (likely while under Russian control). Caroline, 23, was keeping house, and they had a daughter, Esther E., age 1, born in Oregon, USA., Boarders in their home included Andrew Johnson, age 34, sailmaker, born in Norway, and his daughter, Hattie (Harriet), age 4, born in Oregon, USA., Andrew's first wife, Mary L. Langworthy, had died of "consumption" on 3 May 1880; they had married 8 May 1875.
