Eugene evidently was in the Navy for a number of years and then became the first mayor of a tiny town just north of Richmond-- Hercules, where there was an explosives
factory and was just beginning to grow. Now it is residential and there is a
park named after him there.
Dad was born in San Francisco. Went to Galileo High School, Marin Jurnior College and graduated from Cal with a degree in mechanical engineering.
Worked for PG&E, Shell Oil and then off to the Pacific as an Engineering Officer on the USS Selfridge (Destroyer). Not unlike many Navy officers who fought in the Pacific (as I have come to learn), NEVER spoke of his experiences!
Was in the Navy as well as first mayor of Hercules. There was a park dedication, and preserved the Hercules family home and will be using it as a historical center of some sort. Raised by Aunt Genevieve Goldstein. Dad was named Gene "Leland" after General Jay "Leland" Benedict. When enrolled at U.California, USA, Berkeley, his Mom took a job in Berkeley and they moved near the campus so Eugene could live at home. He did not participate in many campus activities as he worked in a gas station to help with his education. He worked at the Shell Oil Refinery summers and then upon graduation he took a job with PG&E. Left PG&E and joined Hercules Powder Company in Hercules, California, USA. Enlisted in the Navy. Lt. and Engineering Officer on a Destroyer. At the end of the War in the Pacific returned to Hercules as Plant Engineer.
Transferred to Sunflower, Kansas to become plant engineer for a rocket powder plant (Korean War) and then transferred to Louisiana, Missouri to convert an old WWII coal gasification demonstration plant into a chemical fertilizer complex. He was an outdoorsman - Boy Scout Leader, excellent fly fisherman, backpaker, camper, skier, hunter, etc.] Parents moved to New Jersey (Hercules parked him there awaiting a new plant start-up) then Baton Rouge, LA to start-up another chemical fertilizer plant.
Dad was too outspoken and bright for his own good (career) and was kept at arms length from Hercules top management in Wilmington, Delaware. Finished his career as the Plant Manager at Hercules. Retired early aged 60 due to poor health (heart). Built a home in Nevada City, Nevada, California, USA and spent the next year fly fishing and fighting ill healt
A difficult father for an independent strong-willed male! Probably a typical WWII father (stern, unwilling or couldn't express emotions, naval discipline further 'enhanced' by not having a father). Very bright. When he wasn't working long hours he was reading and for fun he would solve complex algebraic equations! Instructions as to how to raise a son by GL Woodfield would be to keep expectations high, don't praise as it might be construed as a weakness, and keep him active (intellectually and physically) during all waking hours!
