Ruth Jean just shared a remarkable story I had never heard before. Her mother, Ada (Frankel) Allen, like many of the family in Singapore, helped Jewish refugees fleeing anti-Semitism in Europe in the 1930s. She would meet the ships bringing refugees at the dock and find jobs for them so they would be permitted to stay in Singapore and not be sent away. One man (I'll have to ask Ruth Jean for his name again), from Eastern Europe was so grateful to the family for the help he received, he helped the family during the Japanese bombardment after Siglap (the Frankel estate) was evacuated. When Singapore fell to the Japanese, he rushed over to Siglap and buried family heirlooms and valuables from the estate under an attap hut on the property to keep them safe from Japanese plunder. In the chaos of the Japanese attack and evacuations, he was not able to communicate with the family where he had buried their possessions for safe-keeping. Ruth Jean's father, Dick Allen, was the first in the family to return to Singapore after WWII to see what remained of their estate. When Dick Allen arrived, he serendipitously ran into the man on the dock who told him where to look for the family's buried possessions. from Lisa Ginsburg.
