According to Miriam Lancer, Big Uncle Nathans daughter: My mother lived on Bush Street above Franklin, above Van Ness Avenue. And at the time my father wanted to come and take them to the Presidio. But they didnt have to leave their house. They had to cook outside in the street. And they dynamited to Van Ness Avenue to stop the fire. What my mother told me it was six oclock in the morning and people were using their stoves to burn for food. And the chimneys fell over. Thats what made the fire.
He knew the big executives of all the big companies and he knew the small ones too. And he was very friendly. And he was a Mason. And Howard [Miriams son and only child] takes after him very, very much. My father was a master of Doric Lodge in 1926. And then he became Scottish Rite. He was a KCCH which is Knight Commander of Court of Honor. And he also was a Shriner. And he was a wonderful man.
He survived the Depression. He gave up his jewelry and watchmaking for about a year or two and tried to sell insurance but he went back into a stand. He had a stand on Montgomery Street. And he went back to watchmaking.
he worked on the gearless transmission. And he worked so hard on it and he had a Pierce-Arrow in the basement. Andy they were working on the gearless transmission, on it but there was somebody named Pat Burg, Pat Burg from San Leandro, who had really devised the plans for it. They worked on it. He had a man over in the East Bay, the inventor of it, and they worked together. And they submitted an exhibit back East. And they sent in to New York you know. But they didnt make it. But they didnt have the patent down the way they should of had it, unfortunately. And so it was too bad. But he tried in so many ways. But the Studabaker Company worked on it. They stole it really from him. That was when the first gearless transmission came in. He worked very hard on that. But he missed out on it.
