News paper article by Alan: "My grandparents came from the fields and plains of the Ukraine, ...from Australia, from Norway."
Alan came into the world in the same year as the Ross Island Bridge, from which he used to fish. He grew up in Multnomah after an electric train connecting Portland with Salem allowed working class families to build homes outside the city.
Fierce intelligence applied to years of study and his marrying up helped Alan lift the fortunes of his family. He worked his way through Stanford University while playing sousaphone in the concert and marching band
After medical school in Portland, he was drafted into the Navy. Due to a tendency to seasickness, he asked to serve on a large ship in the Atlantic and was assigned to a destroyer in the South Pacific. Temporarily assigned to a ship holding the record for cases of venereal disease, he and the chaplain were tasked with exhorting the assembled crew to better behavior. They saw no evidence of a positive effect.
Alan began work as a doctor in a family practice in Toledo near his favored steelhead streams, then prepared for his career in ophthalmology through a residency at the Mayo Clinic. There, due to Ernest Hemingways poor effort at disguise, Alan knew he had inspected the authors eyes.
He had a decades-long career at the Corvallis Clinic. Although he was a fellow and board member of prestigious national medical organizations, he measured his professional success by the patients he helped live fuller and sighted lives.
He and his wife Anne raised their children in Corvallis: Greg (Ellen), Kathryn (Dave), John (Jenny), and Tom (Holly). Alan was proud of all of them, most especially for being good people. He showed them how not to submit to seriousness or self-importance with serenades of silly songs, whether for them or for the cats. And he took his children with him to enjoy his passions: music, trout, and Beaver baseball. He also leaves a sister, Judy (Gene), and grandchildren Nick, Katie (Sam), Brian, Abby, and Hilar
