David Friedlunder, after whom my father was named,
was born in 1733 and held the honourable office of unsalaried Rabbi in Rogasen. We know of him that he
was, despite his own personal lifestyle, very tolerant of others and that he had the courage to set aside his
strict religious principles if it was in the interest of the general good. One year, on the eve of Jom Kippur,
while the Jewish community was in the temple, a fire started in Rogasen. David Friedlunder immediately
interrupted the service and led his flock to the see of fire to help his Christian compatriots to fight the
flames.
Other accounts too are describing him as a man of unusual energy and self-discipline. Each
morning, whether summer or winter, he would go between 3 and 4 o'clock in the morning to the nearby lake
to take a bath. If the lake were frozen over he would take an axe with him to break a hole so that he could
jump into the icy water. After his morning bath he would immediately go to his studies, which he interrupted
only with his morning prayers when dawn broke. Meals were taken only after the morning prayers and you
can imagine what iron wills it must have taken to remain for many hours every morning without food after
the early bath. At times of high festivals, from the first day of the month of Etul to the ninth day of Tischri,
he fasted daily from morning to night
