The first Jewish settlers came to Kepno in the second half of the 17thcentury. They amounted to 50 people. Perhaps they came from the Warsaw area, for some of them were using the surname Warschauer. They settled down in the eastern suburb of Kepno, called Kamchatka.
In 1862, 42% of the 373 existing houses belonged to Jews. What is more, 34 out of 42 tenement-houses in the market square (81%) were Jewish property too.
