The obit, dated 7 December 1905, Deaths of I.W. Raphael and wife in San Francisco, California, USA brings sorrow to Susanville people. Telegrams received in Susanville Monday, brought news of the death in San Francisco, California, USA on that morning of Isaac W. Raphael, a pioneer merchant of that city, and head of the great clothing house bearing his name. The news came to Morris and William Asher of this place, brother-in-law of the deceased. Mrr Raphael was well along in years and had been I'll for many months, so that information of his death was not unanticipated, and came not as a surprise. Tuesday, however, dispatches of condolence over the death, Mrs. Raphael, came from Oroville, before they had received news of her demise from San Francisco, California, USA, which, however, came later.
The store of Asher Bros, was closed when news of Mrs. Raphael death came, and Mrr And Mrs. M. Asher and William Asher left for the city Wednesday morning. At this writing no details concerning the latter death are obtainable. The Bulletin speaks of the deceased merchant, as follows: Isaac Raphael was one of California, USAs pioneer business men, having first come to San Francisco, California, USA in 1853, at which time he immediately engaged in business here. His beginning was very modest, and it was many years before he was able to start the firm which now bears his name. The elder Raphael took his son Julius W. into business with him and together they built up the great house. For twenty years father and son were associated in the same corporation, and during that time their relations was more that of chums than of father and son.
Long before his fathers death Julius Raphael assumed control of the firms affairs, although up to the last the elder man took an active interest in all that concerned the corporation which he founded.
Isaac Raphael had long been identified with the fraternal order of the west, and at the time of his death was a member of the Yerba Buena lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He had been enrolled upon the books of that organization ever since it was founded. The Odd Fellows will have charge of the funeral arrangements.
The Bulletin of Tuesday announces the death of Mrs. Raphael as follows: Mrs. Louisa Raphael, the widowed of Isaac Raphael, died suddenly at the family home, 1705 Gough street, at an early hour this morning. Her sad death following so closely on the demise of her husband, was a terrible shock to the family, for Mrr Isaac Raphael had died only Monday morning. During his final illness Mrs. Raphael had never left his side. Night an day she remained at his bed watching his every R with truly wifely devotion, although this unselfish solicitude caused her health to break down, and finally wit her husbands death she succumbed to the ordeal. The double bereavement plunged the family in profound grief, and when it became known to friend the deepest sympathy was expressed for Mrr Julius Raphael, and Mrr Robert Raphael, the sons and their sister. Mrs. Raphael was distinguished for her charity and her love of the retirement of a happy home, to which she was always devoted. She was about 55 years of age and a native of Germany.
